In September 2024, Evans Concrete was secured by Maylim to provide a specialized hard landscaping package for the Oxford North innovation district. As a £1.2 billion investment into the UK’s science and technology infrastructure, the development required a public realm that reflected its high-tech ambition through precision engineering and superior aesthetics. Our brief involved the detailed design, manufacture, and supply of 200 custom architectural precast units, specifically created to form the defining entrance walls, substantial planters, stairway components, and wayfinder plinths.
To achieve the architect's vision, we utilised a bespoke limestone mix design. Each component underwent a rigorous acid-etching process to reveal the fine aggregate within the matrix, resulting in a consistent, high-grade textured finish. This method ensures that the architectural precast units not only look distinct but offer the robust weathering characteristics necessary for high-traffic public spaces. By manufacturing these complex shapes in a controlled factory environment, we eliminated variables associated with in-situ casting, ensuring a flawless finish across the entire batch.
Production took place throughout Q1 and Q2 of 2025. Our team coordinated closely with the main contractor to align with the site's schedule, ensuring that every unit arrived exactly when needed for installation. This approach highlights the importance of synchronized logistics in modern construction, reducing on-site storage requirements and minimizing delays.
The scheme was successfully completed and officially opened by Lord Hague in September 2025. As part of the wider Shay Murtagh Group, Evans benefits from extensive resources and a commitment to quality that underpins every unit we cast. The Oxford North project demonstrates our ability to deliver large-scale architectural precast units that meet the exacting standards of world-class developments.
