Southbank Redevelopment

The Southbank Redevelopment is a landmark example of how precast concrete panels can support both heritage preservation and modern sustainability objectives. Located in the heart of London’s cultural quarter, this Grade II listed structure which was originally completed in 1983 and designed by Sir Denys Lasdun, has undergone a transformative restoration.

Working in collaboration with AHMM (architect), Multiplex Europe Ltd (principal contractor), and Szerelmey Ltd (façade contractor), Evans by Shay Murtagh was proud to deliver 160 bespoke precast concrete panels that were integral to the restoration. These newly manufactured units were created with a 40mm Cornish granite mix, delivering a heavy exposed aggregate finish that mirrors the original design with remarkable accuracy.

What makes this project unique is the meticulous balance between conservation and innovation. By retaining 80% of the original façade and integrating it with new precast elements, the development achieved Net Zero Carbon in construction. This aligns closely with our commitment to sustainable precast solutions and shows how architectural integrity can coexist with climate-conscious practices.

The scale of production and delivery was significant:

  • 270m³ of concrete
  • 35 tonnes of reinforcement
  • 200 tonnes of Cornish granite
  • 47 articulated loads delivered to site

Precision and quality control were central to the project’s success. Every panel was carefully engineered to match existing dimensions, tone, and texture, fully demonstrating the benefits of our in-house design and manufacturing capabilities. This type of attention to detail is essential when working with listed buildings and heritage structures.
