Evans Concrete Wins Manufacturer Of The Year

Evans Concrete Products, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of bespoke concrete solutions, is celebrating today after winning the prestigious Excellence in Manufacturing prize, for the second year running, at the 2016 Derby Telegraph Business Awards.

The Alfreton-based company, which was also shortlisted for the Company of the Year award narrowly missing out to wet suit firm HUUB, impressed judges with its continued and strong growth over the past 12 months. This has been achieved following a series of major contract wins including a multi-million-pound deal to provide concrete for Crossrail station platforms and infrastructures, as well as the redevelopment of the new Princess Royal stand at Jockey Club-owned Cheltenham Racecourse.

The Evans team, which currently stands at over 85 employees all from the local area, has worked hard to achieve this success, trebling in size over the past six years despite the obstacles presented by the economic downturn. At present, the company’s order books are full for the next nine months and with an average order value of £500,000 it anticipates 2016 will see sales surpass the £10 million mark.

Alongside these national achievements, Evans also demonstrated its ability to meet the award’s specific criteria of upholding manufacturing traditions of the local area, while continuing to strengthen the regional economy.

Evans has worked hard to invest in its employees and facilities, which has had a significant impact on its continued success. Many of the original traditions of making and finishing high quality concrete are still evident in the factory today, ensuring the quality and durability of all its materials. All products are cast and finished by hand – a true example of technology meeting tradition – yet the company continues to invest in new equipment to improve performance and customer service.

For example, the installation of a second external overhead gantry crane has increased the company’s lifting capacity from 16 tonne to 30 tonne, allowing for the manufacture of a 28 tonne beam for use in the Crossrail project. In addition, a £250,000 state of the art batching plant, part-funded with a Derbyshire Economic Partnership grant, has helped to improve accuracy and quality, whilst new finishing bays are enabling Evans to fulfil bespoke orders as well as increase productivity levels.

The award was hotly contested, with Evans beating fellow shortlisted companies Bowers Electrical and Danzer, themselves highly-respected and successful businesses.

Company chairman Garry McBride collected the award at a ceremony at Derby’s historic Roundhouse on the 9th June, only a few hundred yards from one of the company’s most viewed projects – the plinth of the statue of Derby County legends Brian Clough and Peter Taylor outside the club’s iPro Stadium.

Our recent contract wins show Evans Concrete to be a truly national company which can hold its own amongst the big players in the industry,” explains Garry McBride. “However, our roots are definitely in Derbyshire. We understand the importance our success has on the local community, both in terms of its economy and employment – we are proud to say that over 80 percent of our workforce lives within a three mile radius.

“Receiving this respected award not only demonstrates that we are a serious and motivated contender in the precast concrete industry, but that the consistent hard work of our employees has been recognised. After all, it’s their skill and expertise that deliver the design, quality and installation standards, of our concrete products.

“We’re delighted to have impressed the judging panel and are extremely proud of this achievement. We have high expectations for the future, in terms of growth and innovation within the precast concrete industry, but we’re confident we will achieve, and surpass them with the continued hard work of everyone within the company,” concludes Garry.

‘I was delighted to award Evans Concrete with the ‘Excellence in Manufacturing Award’. As one of the UK’s leading suppliers of bespoke concrete solutions, this award truly reflects the passion and dedication that the team at Evans put into their work. This is yet another outstanding achievement for the company, and awards them with the recognition that they deserve.” Janine Edwards
